While certain organisms [1], like salamanders and starfish, exhibit incredible regenerative capabilities, humans and other mammals have more limited regenerative abilities. However, recent advances in stem cell research and regenerative medicine are uncovering ways to harness and enhance the body’s natural regenerative mechanisms. Understanding the various mechanisms of cell regeneration can help develop therapies for conditions such as organ failure, spinal cord injuries, and degenerative diseases. The Basics of Cell Regeneration Cell regeneration involves the proliferation of cells to replace damaged or dead cells. This process can take place through several mechanisms [2], depending on the type of tissue, the extent of the damage, and the age of the organism.
