People search this when the usual advice — breathe, sleep more, exercise — has stopped landing. They want a frame that takes the body seriously, not another instruction.

Stress is often framed as a willpower problem: try harder to relax. That framing misses that the autonomic nervous system is not under direct conscious control — it responds to inputs, including environment.

Coherence is the word used here for a nervous-system state in which the body’s rhythms — breath, heart rate, attention — are working together rather than against each other. It is something to cultivate through inputs, not to force through effort.

Heart-rate variability, vagal tone, breath patterning, and sleep architecture are measurable. Chronic sympathetic dominance is linked in the literature to a wide range of downstream effects on cardiovascular, immune, and cognitive function.

Interventions with the strongest support — slow breathing, time in nature, social co-regulation, sleep consistency, structured movement — work by giving the nervous system different inputs, not by lecturing it.
